about

Music & More
Impro Festival

The MMI Festival is a young festival that aims to bring free improvised music closer to the public while experimenting in the field of free improvisation in other artistic disciplines.

The global project of the MMI FESTIVAL is designed to take place in different cities and countries of the European continent in order to connect improvising artists and their audience.

Given the nature and the concept of improvisation, musicians do not require previous rehearsals and are usually able to improvise with others. Artists of other genres will also be invited to the festival to interact with the musicians. The festival is understood as a bridge between cultures and nationalities in Europe.

Music and art have this advantage of bringing human beings closer to each other.

goals

The vision of
MMI Festival

The MMI FESTIVAL was designed as part of an intercultural bridge for artists and improvised art lovers between Germany and Spain. The design of this event guarantees a strong interdisciplinary exchange at an intercultural and social level between Munich and Barcelona and therefore between Germany and Spain.

The project is now planned to also take place in different cities and countries all over the European continent to connect artists among each other and with the audiences.

In a metaphorical context, the MMI FESTIVAL is not only designed to strengthen the collective by listening to the individual but also to strengthen the solidarity between people of diverse demographic and cultural origins by bringing musicians from various countries together. We believe that it is important to approach different groups of people in Europe in a creative, inspiring way and through the exchange of art on an intercultural level.

The MMI FESTIVAL offers the participants the opportunity to listen, see, approach and relate to each other.

story

How it started

The MMI Festival has its origins in the idea of a cultural and artistic exchange between Munich and Barcelona.

Against this background a pilot project was launched in Munich 2016. It was held with seven musicians from Barcelona and three from Munich. An impro reading was part of the program, as well.

Since then, the combination of musical improvisation and related improvised art forms is not just part of the concept, MMI literally means Music & More Impro.

In 2018 the first official edition of the MMI Festival took place in Munich and lived up to its name by following this concept, holding 9 sets on three evenings with musicians from Munich and Barcelona, as well as artists from other genres (poetry, butoh dance, …) who improvised to the sets that were played.

Now the MMI is all set to leave the Bavarian heaven and set sails to its mediterranean port.

“If we were able to adapt our way of relating socially and politically to the attitude that the improvisers have among them, the current world would be different.

It would be a place where we would act with the awareness that we all matter at the same level, a place where listening to our fellow is the first law, where we can also act alone, but without forgetting that we count as a whole.“
